Australian Cattle Dogs are referred to by a number of nicknames: ACD’s, Cattle Dogs, Blue Heelers, Red Heelers, Queensland Heelers and even just Blue or Red.

Cattle Dogs are alert, intelligent and compact dogs whose hard muscular condition conveys agility strength and endurance.  This is a lot of dog in a medium size package – they may look small but they think big, you need to if you have to push cows around. A Cattle Dog does everything 100% throwing themselves totally into the task at hand.

Cattle Dogs are often described as having split personalities:- the working dog, the loyal companion, the clown, the couch potato and juvenile delinquents of note if not exercised and entertained.

Cattle Dogs were bred in Australia to drive stock over long distances in harsh conditions. The early stockmen developed the breed from traditional herding dogs, dingos and possibly dalmation and bull terrier. Cattle Dogs are still used extensively through out the world to work cattle and other stock.

The Breed standard is available from the Kennel Union of South Africa  www.KUSA.co.za.
